Injuries Reported and Man Detained by Police Following London Bridge Stabbing

A man has been detained and shot by police while at least five people have been injured following a stabbing at London Bridge. Reports of the situation first surfaced just before 2 p.m. local time (GMT). The London Ambulance Service later referred to it as a "major incident."

In a statement, the shooting was confirmed by the authorities. "At this stage, the circumstances to the incident at #LondonBridge remain unclear," the Metropolitan Police said on Twitter. "However, as a precaution, we are currently responding to this incident as though it is terror-related. One man has been shot by police. We will provide further information when possible." The suspect shot by police has reportedly died.

The nearby London Bridge underground and mainline stations have been closed as armed police continue to investigate the scene.

Prime Minister Boris Johnson said that he is being briefed on the situation. "[I] want to thank the police and all emergency services for their immediate response," he said on Twitter. Additionally, Labour Party leader Jeremy Corbyn said, "Shocking reports from London Bridge. My thoughts are with those caught up in the incident. Thank you to the police and emergency services who are responding."
