Man Awarded $12,500 After Google Street View Snaps Him at Home Naked

An Argentinian man has been awarded thousands after a Google Street View camera captured him naked in his yard.

CBS News reports that Google is set to give the man $16,1436 in Argentinian pesos, equivalent to $12,500 in US dollars. In 2017, the camera took footage of the man’s bare behind while he walked around on his property, behind a 6 1/2-foot wall in a small town in Argentina. Also visible in the footage were his house number and street name.

The incident went viral online and aired on Argentine news, which, according to the man, led to his coworkers and neighbors mocking him.

When the man first took his case to court, it was dismissed, ruling that it was his own fault that he walked around in “inappropriate conditions in the garden of his home." At the time, Google claimed that the man’s perimeter wall was too low.

However, an appeals court decided that the man had been violated and awarded him the money.

"This involves an image of a person that was not captured in a public space but within the confines of their home, behind a fence taller than the average-sized person. The invasion of privacy ... is blatant," the court wrote.

Google Street View often blurs faces and license plates, a policy the judges referenced in their decision as evidence that the company knows of its responsibility to prevent harm to third parties. The judges said that the same policy should have been applied to the Argentinian man because "it was not his face that was visible but his entire naked body, an image that should also have been prevented."
