TIME Pushes Back After Trump Says He Rejected Being Their 'Person of the Year'

"The President is incorrect about how we choose Person of the Year."

November 25, 2017

On Friday afternoon Donald Trump claimed that TIME reached out to him to tell him that they were likely going to anoint him their "Person of the Year." He also claimed that TIME said it would be necessary for him to do an interview and a major photo shoot to acquire the title. Finally, he says he declined because "probably" wasn't firm enough. Here, read his tweet for yourself:

Less than three hours later, TIME sent out their own tweet disputing Trump's account by saying he was "incorrect' about their method for handing out the annual designation:

While Trump has covered the magazine at least 14 times, almost all of which have come since he announced his run for president, the one that probably easily made the most news was the fake one that was hung in at least four of his 17 golf clubs declaring The Apprentice a television smash:

Relatedly, in December 2015, Trump also sent out this tweet after German Chancellor Angela Merkel was named TIME's Person of the Year:

He would end up getting the honor a year later.
