According to the New York Post, the 48-year-old woman died on Saturday (Dec. 21) as the Sky Princess cruise was returning to Fort Lauderdale, Florida, following an eight-day trip to the Caribbean. The woman, who was said to have been traveling with family, tried to dive overboard but tragically landed on the boat's lower deck.
A statement was issued to Cruise Radio about the unnamed woman's condition.
"Princess Cruises is deeply saddened to confirm the passing of a 48-year-old American female guest who attempted to jump overboard earlier today aboard Sky Princess."
"The guest fell to a lower deck, where she was promptly rescued," the statement read. "Shipboard personnel immediately provided emergency medical care, but despite their best efforts, she could not be revived."
"Our heartfelt condolences go out to the guest’s family and friends during this profoundly difficult time. Grief support services are being offered to guests and crew members affected by this event."
On TikTok, one passenger recorded the above statement, which was played onboard.
According to The Independent, another attempted overboard jump on a Princess Cruises ship also ended fatally for a 72-year-old man in Mexico, just before the ship arrived in Ensenada, San Francisco. The incident happened on the Ruby Princess ship, where the man was reported to have disappeared and after several searches and a viewing of CCTV footage, it was classified as a "man overboard incident" after "having ruled out other possibilities."
