Teen Says She Was Forced to Prove Gender to Buffalo Wild Wings Server in Bathroom
Gerika Mudra was allegedly harassed by the employee after being followed into the bathroom.
An 18-year-old Minnesota high school student claimed she needed to prove that she has breasts to a Buffalo Wild Wings employee, who allegedly harassed her in the bathroom with accusations of being a man.
A charge of discrimination was filed on Wednesday by the gender equality organization Gender Justice on behalf of Gerika Mudra over her alleged experience at the restaurant in April, according to NBC News.
Mudra, a biracial lesbian, claimed she was followed into the bathroom by a server, who pounded on the stall door and insisted that she was a man. "This is a women’s restroom. The man needs to get out of here," the employee allegedly said.
"I am a lady," Mudra said, to which the server responded, "You have to get out now."
Mudra said she "didn't know what to do," so the teenager unzipped her hoodie to show she has breasts to the server, who "just walked out, didn't even apologize or anything."
Mudra admitted this was not "the first time something like this happened," but this alleged ordeal has made her avoid using public bathrooms. "She made me feel very uncomfortable," she said. "After that, I just don’t like going in public bathrooms. I just hold it in."
She added, "I want to be able to use the bathroom in peace."
Gender Justice notes Minnesota's Human Rights Act protects customers against discrimination based on gender identity, sexual orientation, sex, or race.
"We know Gerika was targeted because of how she looks," her stepmother Shauna Otterness said.
"She didn't do anything wrong. She just didn’t fit what that server thought a girl should look like," Otterness continued. "I was shocked and heartbroken by how many people shared similar stories after I posted about it online. This shouldn’t be normal. We can do better, and we have to."
