Barack Obama has apparently lost confidence in Joe Biden’s candidacy.

According to the Washington Post, the former president has reportedly expressed concern over Biden’s 2024 re-election bid, which has faced mounting turmoil over the past several weeks. Democratic congressional leaders, political pundits, and high-dollar donors have publicly urged Biden to withdraw from the race, as Biden continues to trail Donald Trump in battleground states.

Sources told the Post that Obama and Biden have not spoken since the latter’s disastrous June debate against former president Trump, who clinched the GOP presidential nomination at this week’s Republican National Convention. Insiders claimed that Obama was worried about protecting his and Biden’s legacy, and feared that a Biden nomination would hurt Democrats’ chances at controlling both chambers of Congress.

Obama reportedly praised his former vice president for everything he’s accomplished since taking office in 2021, but acknowledged that Biden’s chances at victory have “greatly diminished” following a series of speech blunders and a poor debate performance.

A spokesperson for Obama declined the Post’s request for comment.

In the past several weeks, top Democrats have urged Biden to drop out of the presidential race and allow a more viable candidate to run against Trump before the November election. But despite the growing concerns over his age and mental acuity, Biden has repeatedly said he has no plans to withdraw from the race.

He reiterated his stance during a recent sitdown with BET’s Ed Gordon, saying he would only consider dropping out if faced with a “medical emergency.”

“If somebody, if the doctors, came to me, said, ‘You got this problem and that problem,’” he said about what it would take for him to step aside. “But I made a serious mistake in the whole debate… Look, when I originally ran, I said I was going to be a transitional candidate and I thought that I would be able to move from this and pass it on to someone else. But I didn’t anticipate things getting so, so, so divided, and quite frankly, I think the only thing, age brings a little bit of wisdom, and I think I’ve demonstrated that. I know how to get things done for the country.”

Fast-forward to July 17, when the White House confirmed that Biden had tested positive for COVID. White House press secretary Karine Jean-Pierre said POTUS “is experiencing mild symptoms” and has returned to his Delaware home “where he will self-isolate” while carrying out all of his duties.
