Trumped: John Kasich Suspends His Presidential Campaign (UPDATE)

Ohio Gov. John Kasich held a press conference in Columbus, Ohio to formally announce he was suspending his campaign.

John Kasich will no longer be running for the GOP nomination. ​Wednesday morning, after the Ohio governor canceled a press event in his home state, one of his senior advisors told CNBC that he has suspended his campaign.

“Today’s press gaggle in Dulles has been canceled. Governor Kasich will deliver a statement in Columbus at 5 p.m. EDT today—location TBD," the Kasich campaign said in a statement released to The Guardian.

His supporters are acknowledging the loss.

The candidate's exit from the race doesn't come as a surprise. He had only managed to win 153 delegates (1,237 are required for the nomination) and was expected to drop out eventually.

However, the Kasich campaign released a statement Wednesday morning saying Trump's victory in the Indiana primary was "not going to alter Gov. Kasich’s campaign plans," leading people to believe he wasn't yet prepared to drop out. Kasich also tweeted a video in the theme of Star Wars Day Wednesday morning claiming he was the only candidate who could defeat Hillary Clinton:

Ted Cruz has also dropped out of the Republican race, meaning Donald Trump will get the nomination as long as a contested convention does not take place.

The Kasich campaign did not immediately return Complex's request for comment.
