Obama Hilariously Recreates Classic 'Key & Peele' Moment When Greeting Team USA Basketball Players
The classic 'Key & Peele' sketch, which has never fully left the pop culture lexicon, is back front and center thanks to the former POTUS.
Thanks to Barack Obama, the streaming stats for the beloved (and long-defunct) sketch comedy series Key & Peele are most certainly about to see a boost.
As you’ve no doubt seen making the rounds this morning, a clip of the former POTUS’ greeting members of the Team USA men’s basketball lineup shows him more or less recreating one of the most celebrated moments from Jordan Peele and Keegan-Michael Key’s five-season Comedy Central hit.
In the Team USA clip, seen above and/or below, Obama appears to be employing the same dap-or-handshake differentiation process as Peele's version of the 44th president.
Longtime Key & Peele fans will note that this is a full circe moment in more ways than one, as the original sketch was itself preceded by footage of Obama doing the same during a prior Team USA meet-up while in office.
In a 2012 interview with Conan O’Brien, Peele discussed meeting Obama for the first time, and how shocking it was to him that he was not only aware of the show but was quite the fan of his impression.
"I couldn’t even believe that he saw our show. … He wanted to meet us, very specifically," Peele said at the time. "It was crazy. We got to meet him."
During their meeting, per Peele, Obama joked that he needed to employ the skills of Luther, another character from Key & Peele who served as the "anger translator" for Peele’s Obama. Later, Obama got his wish.
