Chappell Roan Teases Long-Awaited Fan-Favorite Track 'The Subway'
The Grammy winner has performed the song at shows and festivals many times over the past two years.
It looks like new Chappell Roan music is finally in transit.
Over the course of the past few days, posters of the Grammy-winning artist have appeared throughout New York City. One shows Roan sporting a new hairstyle, along with a message that reads, “Going through a break up? Get bangs!” In her hair are rats, a cigarette, and a bread tag. Eagle-eyed fans noticed that the date on the bread tag reads “August 1,” hinting at a release date for new material.
Roan’s creative director Ramisha Sattar further fueled the fire after she reshared a video from a fan account to her Instagram Story, featuring a truck with a license plate reading “THE SBWY” driving toward Saskatchewan, Canada.
Hardcore fans know that Roan has been performing her song “The Subway” during tour stops and festival slots for the past two years. However, she has not yet released a studio version of the fan-favorite song. In an April interview on the Las Culturistas podcast, Roan revealed she felt conflicted about releasing a studio version of “The Subway.”
“I’ve been banging my head against the wall with ‘The Subway,’ because… some songs just work live — certain things work live — and they don’t work in the studio,” Roan said. “For ‘The Subway’, it’s just going to feel different, and different doesn’t always mean worse…You just have to really take yourself out of it and be like, ‘This is different and that’s okay.’”
Lyrically, the song tells the story of Roan trying to get over an ex, whom she is forced to run into regularly. “I'm still counting down all of the days / 'Til you're just another girl on the subway,” she sings.
Could Roan finally be releasing “The Subway?” It looks like we might not have to wait much longer to find out. Should we finally get “The Subway,” this will mark Roan’s second single release this year. Back in March, she released “The Giver,” a country-inspired, sapphic anthem for the ages.
