Daddy Yankee Announces Split From Wife Mirredys González After Nearly 30 Years of Marriage
The reggaeton icon married González in 1995 and share two children together.
After nearly 30 years of marriage, Daddy Yankee and his wife Mireddys González have called it quits.
On Monday, the Puerto Rican reggaeton icon shared the news on his Instagram Story, explaining that despite months of trying to save their relationship, González had filed for divorce.
“With a heart full of respect and honesty, I want to share important news about my personal life,” the rapper wrote in Spanish. “After more than two decades of marriage and after many months of trying to save my marriage, in which my wife and I share, today my lawyers responded to a divorce petition [we] received on behalf of Mireddys.”
He continued, “My faith in Christ has been my refuge throughout this time, and it was a constant guide as we tried to overcome our differences. I respect Mireddy’s decision and I’m thankful for the time we spent together, full of blessings, values, love, and with a beautiful family that will continue to be our priority.”
According to People, the couple, who are both 47, were high school sweethearts and tied the knot in March 1995. The couple share two children—daughter Jesaaelys, 28, and 26-year-old son Jeremy. DY also has another daughter, Yamilet, from a previous relationship.
“This is not an easy time, but I understand it is part of my life’s process,” said the 6-time Latin Grammy winner further into his statement. “It is my responsibility to accept it and move forward, to protect my stability, my children, and everything we have built over the years.”
“Thank you for your unconditional support. These will be my only statements,” he added. “Thank you for your prayers and for always allowing me to share my music and my life with you all. Now more than ever I trust that God has a purpose for every chapter of our lives.”
Daddy Yankee announced he was retiring from music in 2022 before releasing his final album Legendaddy that year and embarking on his sold-out La Última Vuelta World Tour, per Remezcla. During his final concert, he announced that he would be dedicating his life and career to God.
