Winner of Shakira’s Lamborghini Wants to Sell It for $1 Million Over Maintenance Costs
Michael Mejia, a Colombian-American artist, says the costs of gas and insurance for the custom 2022 Lamborghini Urus are expensive to maintain.
Michael Mejia, the winner of Shakira’s Lamborghini contest giveaway, plans to sell the car.
Last November, the iconic Colombian singer announced she was giving away her custom 2022 Lamborghini Urus to someone who creates a social media video for her new song, “Soltera.”
Mejia, an New York City-born Colombian-American artist, was crowned the winner with a TikTok that featured his own illustrations of Shakira, and other scenes of his life.
In a new interview with Univision’s El Gordo y la Flaca, Mejia said he received the car last week along with an additional $90,000 from Shakira to help cover expenses such as taxes, the car’s title transfer, six months of insurance payments, and other legal costs.
However, the extra cash from the singer wasn’t enough to maintain the coveted car and Mejia is now looking to part with it.
“I’ve had the car for four days, and I’ve put gas in it every other day. Two full tanks were $70 each,” Mejia told El Gordo y La Flaca’s Tanya Charry, noting that the car is worth $230,000. “I was told that I could [make more money] if I sold the car off in parts, like the rear-view mirror, the tires, the steering wheel.”
“I didn’t expect car insurance to cost $2,000 a month, and that’s how much it is. With the money she gave me, the car will be sustained for a while but it’s still very expensive to maintain,” he continued. “Someone offered me, believe it or not, between 700 and 800,000 dollars. That’s wonderful, but a lot of people are telling me ‘Don’t sell it for less than one [million].’”
“I think that it’s everyone’s dream to have a million. If it’s one million and one dollars, I’ll be happy,” he said with a laugh.
