Roy Ayers, Godfather of Neo-Soul, Dead at 84

His cause of death is unclear.

Roy Ayers, the legendary American funk, soul, and jazz composer, vibraphonist, and music producer, has passed away, according to Variety. He was 84 years old.

News of Ayers' death was confirmed by his family in a Facebook post on his page Wednesday. Per the message, he died in New York city after a long illness.

"It is with great sadness that the family of legendary vibraphonist, composer and producer Roy Ayers announce his passing which occurred on March 4th, 2025 in New York City after a long illness," the message reads. "He lived a beautiful 84 years and will be sorely missed. His family ask that you respect their privacy at this time, a celebration of Roy's life will be forthcoming."

Ayers was born in Los Angeles on Sept. 10, 1940, and is famous for his biggest hit 'Everybody Loves the Sunshine' under his group Roy Ayers Ubiquity. Ayers' impact on the music world is evident, with big-name artists such as Mary J. Blige, Common, Tyler, the Creator, and Ye, the artist formerly known as Kanye West, having sampled the neo-soul legend's work.

He collaborated with musicians including the Roots, Guru, Fela Kuti and Rick James. Ayers leaves behind his wife Argerie, and their children Mtume and Ayana Ayers.
