Gordo Shares Uplifting Video for Drake-Featuring Single "Healing"
The track appears on the Grammy-nominated producer's new album 'Diamante.'
Drake appears to be moving on from his war with Kendrick Lamar, as the 6 God recently joined forces with frequent collaborator Gordo for two tracks ("Sideways," "Healing") on the Grammy-nominated producer's debut album Diamante.
On Tuesday, Gordo released the video for "Healing," directed and edited by Theo Skudra and filmed in Dududu, South Africa.
"As a Drake fan for almost half my life, I’ve watched every single video he’s ever dropped," Gordo tweeted hours ahead of the premiere. "And to now say we’re dropping a music video together is a dream come true."
Though Drake doesn't appear, the visual does have a "God's Plan"-esque show of generosity, opening on a man named Emmanuel Madonsela describing his family's mornings. "We leave early so that we take a very slow walk," he says. "We're talking, we're laughing, remembering something. In the back of my mind, I'm still saying, like, 'God, give me a chance to have a car. This queen here, she can't do this all her life.' Still hoping. Let's walk."
Madonsela and family members Sthembile Sangweni, Nonhlakanipho Sangweni, and Nokwazi Sangweni are seen dancing to "Healing" and going about their daily lives throughout the visual. At the 4:40 mark, a caption explains, "After watching a cut of the video, Emmanuel and his family were asked to have a look outside."
Waiting for the ecstatic family is a brand new car. On FaceTime, Gordo tells Emmanuel, "Your story just, like I can't, like I've been thinking about it nonstop, you know? And it means so much to me knowing how much effort you put into your life and your family. I really love it, and I just wanted to do something to help, brother. That's all."
Gordo breaks down the genesis of the clip in the YouTube description, writing, "About 2 months ago while I was scrolling through TikTok, I stumbled upon THE DON Madfunz, a guy from South Africa with amazing energy. His taste in music grabbed my attention, but it was his dancing, smile and story that really hooked me. The Don would walk 9 miles to work every single day despite the weather or his personal safety… he risked it all for his family… and dreamed one day of his very slow walk being over and finally being able to own a car for himself so he can provide for his family. When I was thinking about the 'HEALING' music video, I couldn’t get Don out of my head... I knew I had to get him involved… so I hit up my friend, and director, Theo Skudra, and we decided to make a video following a day in Don’s life. We filmed in Dududu, a rural area about an hour outside of Durban. We captured Don's everyday life – the simple joys, the positivity, and the resilience. While I couldn’t be there, the best part of this whole process was at the end when I surprised Don with a car. Seeing his reaction was priceless. It was one of his dreams to own a car, and knowing I could help make that happen was incredible. With this video, I wanted to show that Don’s positive attitude and joyful spirit are something we can all learn from, no matter what we’re going through. His story is a reminder that even when life gets tough, you can still find reasons to smile. I hope this video touches your hearts like it did mine."
According to Gordo, who produced several tracks on 2022's Honestly, Nevermind ("Sticky," "Calling My Name," "Massive") and 2023's For All the Dogs ("Rich Babby Daddy," "Gently"), Drake has "been past" his beef with Kendrick. Last week he told People that Drizzy seems "happier" following the exchange of diss tracks.
"The thing is that he was just on the longest tour ever," Gordo shared. "He literally did a tour for like a year. I think he's just chilling."
