Common's New Album 'Black America Again' is Here

Common's new album Black America Again is finally here. The 15-track album features John Legend, Stevie Wonder, Bilal, Marsha Ambrosius, and more. The tracklist includes several of Common's previously-released singles, including "Home," "Black America Again," and "Letter to the Free." The last of these was also featured in Ava Duvernay's Netflix documentary 13th, which takes a deep look at African-American history from the end of slavery to today and its relationship to the criminal justice system. Black America Again is Common's eleventh studio album; it follows the release of his most recent album Nobody's Smiling in 2014.

"I was inspired by people enjoying art," he said about the album in a recent interview with Complex, noting that the industry's embrace of Kendrick Lamar and Chance the Rapper helped give him confidence that his style was still relevant today. "That opened a lane for me because that's what type of artist I am."

Common performed "Black America Again" alongside BJ the Chicago Kid during a recent appearance on The Tonight Show. The appearance was minimalist, choosing to highlight the song's reflections on police brutality and black peoples' successes and struggles. He also showcased several other Black America Again tracks during his NPR Tiny Desk concert at the White House back in early October. It's been a long road to this new album, but we're hoping it was all worth it.
