Lizzo Reflects on Past Decade With an Inspiring Message for Fans

Lizzo has shared some words of encouragement as we head into 2020.

Just hours before the new year, the "Truth Hurts" singer shared a tweet that included two photos of herself: One was taken in 2009 and the other was a 2019 cover of TIME magazine in which she was declared "Artist of the Year." Lizzo reflected on how much has changed over the last decade, which she says began with tragedy: "2009 was the year my daddy died," she wrote. "2009 was the year I lived in my car and cried myself to sleep on Thanksgiving."

The tweet took a positive turn and underscored how quickly life can change.

"2019 is the year my album and song went No. 1. 2019 is the year I told my mama I can buy her house," she continued. "Anything can happen in a decade. Tomorrow is the beginning of your anything."

Lizzo knows first-hand the importance of resilience and never giving up. The 31-year-old artist previously admitted she nearly quit music a couple of years ago because her single "Truth Hurts" was an initial flop. Though it took some time, the record eventually garnered mainstream success, topping multiple charts, receiving platinum certifications, and earning Lizzo three Grammy nominations for 2020: Record of the Year, Best Pop Solo Performance, and Song of the Year.

"Now the song that made me want to quit is the song that everyone’s falling in love with me for," she told People magazine over the summer, "which is such a testament to journeys: Your darkest day turns into your brightest triumph."
