Don Omar Says He's Cancer-Free Following Surgery, Reportedly Had Kidney Removed (UPDATE)
The reggaeton superstar didn't reveal further details about his diagnosis.
UPDATED 6/18, 5:05 p.m. ET: Don Omar says he’s now cancer-free in a new message shared to his Instagram account on Tuesday.
“Today I woke up without cancer and grateful,” wrote the 46-year-old reggaeton pioneer in Spanish. “Thank you for your well wishes, prayers, and thousands of messages. My surgery was successful and now all that’s left is to recover.”
Other notable reggaeton heavyweights such as Wisin, Yandel, Nicky Jam, and Farruko shared their well-wishes in the comments section.
Although Omar did not provide any additional details of his cancer diagnosis himself, Raúl De Molina, co-host of Univision’s afternoon pop culture show, El Gordo y La Flaca, said he spoke with the rapper over the phone and confirmed that Omar had his right kidney removed.
“Around six in the afternoon, I got a text message and then two minutes later a phone call from Don Omar to tell me that his surgery had gone well,” said Molina on Tuesday’s episode of his long-running show.
“It was a surgery that lasted four hours and now he’s feeling okay. I could still hear the effects of the anesthesia when he spoke. But I received great joy when he told me, ‘They took out the cancer.’”

Don Omar revealed some startling news about his health.
The reggaeton legend took to Instagram early Monday morning to reveal that he has cancer.
“Today yes, but tomorrow I won’t have cancer,” he wrote alongside a photo of a hospital wristband. “Good intentions are well received. See you soon. #fuckcancer.”
From the wristband, it appears he’s receiving medical care in Orlando, Florida. Further details about his diagnosis are unknown at this time.
The 46-year-old Puerto Rican star is a pioneer in reggaeton, becoming one of the first big artists to bring the genre to the world with his first studio album, 2003’s The Last Don.
Omar released his latest album, Forever King last year, and is set to kick off the second leg of his Back to Reggatón Tour on Aug. 7 in Oakland, California. The jaunt will also stop in San Diego, Portland, and Newark, and will wrap on Sept. 15 in Elmont, New York.
The trek is Omar’s first since hitting the road with Daddy Yankee in 2015 for the Kingdom Tour.
Prayers up for Don Omar.
