Mariah Carey Says Her Mother and Sister Died on Same Day: 'My Heart Is Broken'
It's unknown how the singer's family members died.
Mariah Carey’s mother and sister tragically passed away over the weekend.
"My heart is broken that I’ve lost my mother this past weekend. Sadly, in a tragic turn of events, my sister lost her life on the same day," the singer told People of her mother, Patricia, and her sister, Alison.
"I feel blessed that I was able to spend the last week with my mom before she passed," she continued. "I appreciate everyone’s love and support and respect for my privacy during this impossible time."
It’s unknown at this time how the two passed away.
It seems Carey inherited her vocal chops from her mother, who was a Juilliard-trained opera singer and vocal coach. Patricia welcomed daughters Alison and Mariah, and son Morgan, with husband Alfred Roy Carey, whom she later divorced when Mariah was three.
However, Carey’s relationship with her mother and siblings wasn’t easy.
"Like many aspects of my life, my journey with my mother has been full of contradictions and competing realities. It's never been only black-and-white—it's been a whole rainbow of emotions," the 55-year-old penned in her 2020 memoir, The Meaning of Mariah Carey.
"Our relationship is a prickly rope of pride, pain, shame, gratitude, jealousy, admiration and disappointment," she added. "A complicated love tethers my heart to my mother's."
She also wrote that it was “emotionally and physically safer,” at the time, that she didn’t have contact with her siblings.
