UPDATED 7/13/16: The day has finally arrive. El-P just declared the winner of the Pokémon rap remix contest.

See below for the original story.

Pokémon fans are a passionate bunch, and with the release of the new app Pokémon Go, it was difficult to escape last week's fervor for the game. Rapper, producer, and one half of Run the Jewels, El-P, decided to have a little bit of fun at enthusiasts' expense last night.

The only problem was, a whole hell of a lot of Pokémon fans weren't at all impressed with El's attempt at humor.

A short while later El-P conceded his original point and offered an olive branch.

Then, he hopped over to Instagram to lay down a Pokémon-themed freestyle.

After which he opened up the Internet to a rap remix challenge to turn his freestyle into an actual song.

A surprising number of people took him up on the offer.
