On her new single “Not Born to Behave,” MDRA encourages her audience to follow their own path regardless of what is expected of them.
Featuring Toronto rapper Spoogzz, the track has a sound as bold as its message, with a speaking-rattling beat and energetic flow. It embodies the Toronto artist’s belief in always following her own ideologies and never conforming to society’s expectations, regardless of the adversaries she has faced while chasing her aspirations.
MDKNIGHT & manlikepat are the two Toronto producers behind the beat. MDRA says she was instantly inspired by the instrumental. “I just need to hop on it,” she tells us. “I heard my dawg Spoogzz on it, so I sent it to him to add in a verse and just as I thought, he bodied his verse.”
MDRA says the track is actually a re-release. She decided to drop the song and music video after rebranding and changing her name. “The title in itself is my personal motto and I wanted my supporters to be able to enjoy it after the love I got for it last year, when I released it with my first tape.”
The music video, directed by Orazio, takes place in Ontario hinterland and carries the same theme of non-conformity.
“We actually shot it over a year ago,” MDRA says about the accompanying visuals. “It was cool to shoot this he brought my ideas to life, and I got to bring all my dawgs and girls together so it meant a lot that they were a part of it. We went up North to fuck around on some ATVs and just had fun with it.”
