Charli XCX Says Trying to Connect With Lorde for 'Girl, So Confusing' Remix 'Spoke to the Narrative of the Song Itself'

Charli XCX and Lorde are officially on the same page after connecting on the remix of BRAT song "Girl, so confusing."

As the pop singers were frequently compared to each other in the early 2010s, which led Charli to admit once being jealous of the "Royals" artist, Lorde naturally came up during Charli's Billboard cover story.

For longtime fans of the two, it wasn't hard to read between the lines of "Girl, so confusing," which is why Charli approached Lorde with an early cut of the song before its release.

"I had to go through the process of telling her that this song is about her and her being OK with that first,” Charli told the publication. "I was trying to meet up with her for almost a year, and we kept having this weird, like, we were [going to], then we wouldn’t."

She continued, "It spoke to the narrative of the song itself. In the end, it didn’t work out. Then the day before the record came out, I left her a voice note. [Lorde] replied straight away and was like, ‘Oh, my God, I had no idea you felt this way. I’m so sorry.’ And then was like, ‘You know, maybe I should be on a version of the song.’ I didn’t even ask her. She brought it up."

Adding that the unplanned collaboration took "three days total," Lorde also shared her perspective of the song, calling it a "two-part thing of both deep empathy for my friend and this feeling of ‘Man, I’ve been misunderstood, and I really want to make it right.'"

"It’s funny. When I was listening to [Lorde's] verse for the first time, I was backstage at the show," Charli said. "My hair stylist also does her hair. He had also just done her hair for the show, too, so he was just with her, and then he came to me and was like, 'I’m so happy you guys are good.'"

The same was true for Lorde, who shared that while writing her "Girl, so confusing" verse, she "was saying these things to her for the first time."

"There was such a rawness and an immediacy to what I was saying. I love that we truly did work it out on the remix," she continued. "There’s something very brat about that, something very meta and modern. Only Charli could make that happen. She had opened up a channel between us, and it made me say things that I had never said. I was articulating things I’d never said or maybe even things I’ve never even heard said. This whole thing has been such a huge honor."

Hopefully the remix caused a permanent reconciliation, as Charli previously told Rolling Stone UK that she was once hurt over "Royals" being a global hit while her music was still budding.

"You get over it and then you try to figure out all the things that are unique about you and you pursue that, and then probably in five months’ time you have a breakdown about something else," Charli told the publication.
