Snoop Dogg Talks Jay-Z and Super Bowl Halftime Show Selection Process: 'This Is a Big Event’
Snoop Dogg credited Jay-Z's position as the NFL's entertainment strategist for inviting hip-hop artists to perform at the Super Bowl.
Snoop Dogg thinks artists should wait their turn instead of being disappointed that they haven't yet been invited to perform at the Super Bowl.
Dr. Dre and Snoop were special guests for a live episode of Drink Champs at ComplexCon 2024, and during the conversation with hosts N.O.R.E. and DJ EFN, the West Coast icons were asked about the Super Bowl.
N.O.R.E. began his question by referencing Dre and Snoop's Super Bowl LVI performance alongside Eminem, Mary J. Blige and Kendrick Lamar. 50 Cent and Anderson .Paak also made guest appearances during the set.
"Since y'all performed at the Super Bowl and that Super Bowl happened to be in Los Angeles, it's this big thing that's going on right now that everyone thinks that wherever the Super Bowl takes place, that artists that's there is supposed to..." N.O.R.E. said. The Queens native was referencing Lil Wayne's disappointment that he wasn't invited to perform the Super Bowl LIX in New Orleans, as Kendrick Lamar is set to headline.
But Snoop praised Jay-Z's position as the NFL's live music entertainment strategist, although some blamed the rapper and music mogul for New Orleans native Weezy not being chosen as the performer for Super Bowl LIX.
"What we need to think about is that before Jay-Z got control of the Super Bowl wasn't no n**gas performing. So let's go back to the essence of the beginning of bridge," Snoop said.
"He's creating a wave of artists to have an opportunity to perform. If you are a good artist and you are a great artist, your time will come," the Long Beach native continued. "I was never crying about it or mad about it when Dr. Dre called me and asked me to get his back. I was there for him, but I didn't feel like I was supposed to be there. I was in demand to be there."
Snoop continued, "This is a big event. People looking at everything when they picked the person to perform, you should just be honored that hip-hop is being able to be seen on that platform for all of us and not hate on the next."
Although Lil Wayne secured a gig as weekly guest on NFL GameDay Morning, the rapper previously expressed that he was letdown at the Super Bowl decision.
"I blame myself for not being mentally prepared for a letdown and for just automatically mentally putting myself in that position like somebody told me that was my position. So I blame myself for that," he said in an Instagram video in September.
Back in September, Snoop directly addressed the debate surrounding Lil Wayne not being selected to perform at the Super Bowl.
"“Remember, I was at No Limit Records for three years and I watched his whole career come to life and then watched him get bigger than me and I was gigantic at the time and I loved seeing his growth," Snoop said in a conversation with Shannon Sharpe and Chad Johnson, per Billboard.
“Me and Wayne is family to this day, me and Kendrick is family to this day, and me and Jay-Z, and me and Roger Goodell. I don’t know who is the decision maker, all I know is that I’ll be at home watching the Super Bowl and when the halftime show comes on, I’ll be watching that as well.”
Super Bowl LIX is scheduled for February 9, 2025 at 5:30 p.m. CST.
ComplexCon, on the other hand, is taking place now in Las Vegas for the first time after previously being held in Long Beach, California. You can still cop tickets to attend the event, which will conclude on Sunday, November 17, by heading this way. Playboi Carti performed on Saturday night ( Nov. 16) while Travis Scott, who is the artistic director of the festival for 2024, will perform on Sunday night.
Snoop is gearing up to release his twentieth studio album, Missionary. The album is set to drop on December 13, 2024 and will feature production from Dr. Dre.
