Four years on from “Try Me”, the striking career-maker she released while studying Economics at university in South Africa, Afro-R&B star Tems has releaed her debut album, Born In The Wild.

A massive, 18-track opus, the album plays to all Tems’ strengths, balancing her warm and disarming vocals with strident tales of knowing your worth and not suffering fools. Keeping the spotlight to herself, she shares the stage with just two guests: J. Cole and Asake. Production on the album comes from a similarly small team of collaborators. GuiltyBeatz handles the bulk of the instrumentals with the remaining credits going to Spax, Sarz, Nsikak David, P2J, and London.

Born In The Wild is how I feel the world is,” Tems said in a recent interview with The Evening Standard. “I really feel like the world is a wilderness, like the world sometimes feels like a jungle where there’s lions and there’s sheep and there’s monkeys. It feels like a fight for survival and I just want to represent courage, bravery and authenticity. The world has completely changed in the past four years.”

Ahead of a massive world tour that kicks off in London next Wednesday (June 12), tap into Born In The Wild after the jump.
