Sony Issues a Statement on Kesha and Dr. Luke's Contract
Kesha is signed to Dr. Luke’s Kemosabe Records, a subsidiary of Sony.
Kesha's ongoing legal battle with Dr. Luke has hit another major snag. Scott A. Edelman, a lawyer for Sony, released a statement on behalf of the label claiming the company cannot interfere with Kesha's contract with Dr. Luke, according to The New York Times. "Sony has made it possible for Kesha to record without any connection, involvement or interaction with Luke whatsoever. But Sony is not in a position to terminate the contractual relationship between Luke and Kesha." The statement continued, “Sony is doing everything it can to support the artist in these circumstances, but is legally unable to terminate the contract to which it is not a party."
The statement follows Kesha's lengthy personal message she shared on Facebook earlier this week where she insisted that her case is not about breaking her contract from Sony, but is about being "free" from her abuser. Dr. Luke's lawyer released a statement contending any claim Kesha cannot record without Dr. Luke is a "myth." According to the Times, Kesha is currently signed to Dr. Luke’s label, Kemosabe Records, a subsidiary of Sony, through a separate deal with his production company, Kasz Money Inc.
