Welcome to ON A LEVEL, a sitdown interview series brought to you by Complex UK, which sees our EIC, Joseph ‘JP’ Patterson, get real with some of the greatest music talents of now.

In the second episode of ON A LEVEL: Season 2, JP chops it up with grime and UK rap veteran Scorcher. The North London MC is fresh off of winning a 2025 MOBO Award for Best Grime Act, which was highly deserved after bringing a new excitement to the scene with his viral freestyles. Having started out in the early 2000s spitting on pirate radio, Scorcher—who is also a revered producer and a talented actor, starring in shows like Top Boy and films like The Intent—is in his starboy era, ready to reach the heights he wasn’t always able to reach due to life happenstance. Here, Scorcher dishes on grime’s new gen and why the old guard need to stop living in the past, why the dorks and culture vultures need to go, his future in acting and so much more.
