Wife of Ex-Maroon 5 Member Mickey Madden Accuses Him of Assault, Sexting Teens
Kate Bowman claims the bassist went "insane" after she confronted him over the alleged explicit messages.
Former Maroon 5 bassist Mickey Madden reportedly checked into rehab after allegedly attacking his wife, Kate Bowman.
According to a newly filed restraining order obtained by TMZ, Bowman said the assault occurred on July 21, after a stranger informed her about Madden’s alleged inappropriate communication with teenagers. She claimed she confronted her husband about the allegations, which included “sexting teens about his rape fantasy and soliciting lewd images.” Bowman said Madden went “insane” when she brought up the accusations and shoved her into a kitchen counter once she got her hands on his phone.
Bowman said her husband of five years chased her outside their home and pushed her into a gate before she ran to the street and began going through his text messages. Although Madden was purportedly barefoot and only wearing underwear, he managed to catch up with Bowman and assaulted her two more times.
According to Bowman’s filing, she left her home after the attack and stayed with a friend. Madden allegedly reached out to her shortly after, saying he was sorry for his behavior and was checking into a sex-addiction rehab program. The filing also includes purported handwritten letters and text messages Bowman sent to Madden following the alleged attack. The messages included several apologies and references to the aforementioned rape fantasy texts.
“Please forgive me. This all felt like a private and fake harmless fantasy,” one of the messages read. “It has no bearing on real life at all. I am so ashamed and so sorry.”
Bowman said she was terrified of Madden and has already contacted an attorney to determine her next steps. She is seeking a restraining order prohibiting Madden from going within 100 yards of her.
Bowman also accused Madden of using his money to control her, but she recently got a job that will give her more financial freedom. Bowman plans to stay in her home while Madden lives in an apartment that she prepaid. She’s also seeking ownership of their dogs, Toast and Jam, and wants Madden to continue covering her expenses.
TMZ reports that a judge granted Bowman a temporary restraining order, but has not ordered Madden to move out of their home.
The filing came about five years after Mickey was arrested for alleged domestic violence.
“We are deeply devastated by this disappointing news,” a Maroon 5 spokesperson told People magazine at the time. “As we learn more, we are looking at this very seriously. For now, we are allowing all of the individuals involved the space to work things through.”
Although the Los Angeles District Attorney’s Office ultimately dismissed the case without filing charges, Madden announced he was leaving the band just two weeks after his arrest.
“I have some things that I need to deal with and address right now and so I have decided to take a leave of absence from Maroon 5 for the foreseeable future,” Madden told People. “During this time, I do not want to be a distraction to my bandmates. I wish them the absolute best.”
