Keri Hilson Sheds More Light on Her Beyoncé Diss Lyrics: 'Never Wanted It to Come Out'
Keri Hilson said she felt pressured to record the shady lyrics seemingly aimed at Beyoncé.
Keri Hilson “would love the opportunity” to sit down with Beyoncé.
The Georgia-born singer-songwriter made headlines this week when she opened up about her rumored beef with Queen Bey. The whispers began circulating back in 2009 when Hilson released her “Turnin’ Me On (Remix),” which included a few shady lines seemingly directed at Beyoncé.
Although Hilson said there is no bad blood between her and the Cowboy Carter artist, she revealed they “never got a chance to talk” about the drama.
“I’ve always wondered what she was told about that, if she was told the truth,” Hilson recently told People magazine. “I don’t know if it will ever happen, but it’s something I’ve dreamt about.”
The “Turnin’ Me On (Remix)” included eyebrow-raising lines in Keri’s second verse: “Your vision cloudy if you think that you’re the best/You can dance, she can sing/But she need to move it to the left, left,” Hilson sang, an apparent reference to Beyoncé’s “Irreplaceable” track. “She need to go have some babies/She needs to sit down, she fake.”
Hilson told People that the lines “probably were” about Bey, but she couldn’t be sure because she “didn’t write them.”
“I was forced to sing them,” she said, claiming her creative team was desperate to “garner attention” with the updated track. “It didn’t matter if that was negative or positive, and calls were made that twisted my arm into doing something that I never wanted to do. I never wanted to record it. I definitely never wanted it to come out.”
Hilson admitted she would’ve handled the situation more effectively and would’ve possibly “cleaned it up." However, she said she chose to bite her tongue in the interest of preserving her career.
“I wanted it to go away,” she said about the drama. “I can give myself grace. I was young, I felt these people had my career in their hands, and one phone call could have ended it. That was the fear that was presented to me.”
Hilson is now gearing up to release to release her third studio, We Need to Talk, on April 18.
