Schoolboy Q’s Comments on 'Checking In' Resurface Amid Big U’s Case
Q said people have called him just to "check in" when they arrived in Los Angeles.
A clip of SchoolBoy Q speaking about the practice of "checking in" when touching down in Los Angeles has resurfaced after Eugene "Big U" Henley turned himself in after being charged with running a "mafia-like" organization.
Earlier this week, Henley was taken into custody and accused of committing an array of criminal activities such as extortion, kidnapping, fraud, embezzlement, prostitution, and murder. The case against Henley also highlights how he is associated with the idea of "checking in," which is, according to the complaint against Henley, when an individual from out-of-town visits a city and meets with the local street representative to pay a 'tax' or 'fee' to move around freely and conduct business.
Last year, SchoolBoy Q discussed the whispered practice of "checking in" during his visit to Drink Champs, and now that moment has resurfaced on social media. According to Q, Los Angeles has become a dangerous place for rappers because they have to "check in" with people they don't even know.
"Everybody be checking in. That's y'all favorite thing to do. Check in with somebody that's going to rob your stupid ass," said Q. "You think the guy that you don't know motherfucker in California got your back? The guy that got beef with other hoods, you're checking in with that dude? Go to the hotel, get you something to eat, go back to the hotel, go have some fun where shit is fun. Why do you want to go over there? For what?"
He continued, "Don't call me. Motherfuckers have the nerve to call me sometimes. Like what are you talking about bro?I'm playing video games, my daughter got a soccer game tomorrow, bro. I'm not about to drive over there."
Henley has never shied away from the whispered practice of "checking in," as he has spoken about it in the 2021 docuseries called Hip Hop Uncovered. Federal authorities cited the show several times in their case against Henley as he said things like, "If I don't pick up the phone, that can mean death for somebody," in the docuseries.
