Despite what you may have heard, the long-discussed Akon City project is “not gonna stop,” at least according to the man himself.

Below, we dig into the latest on the planned Senegal city, which Akon claims has been made the subject of alleged “misinformation.” Keep reading for more.

What is Akon City?

For several years now, Akon City has been the subject of numerous headlines, often focused on updates regarding its progress. In short, per Akon, the project was envisioned as “a headquarters for all of Africa,” all built atop what he previously told TMZ was “tomorrow’s technology.”

In January 2020, Akon told fans he had secured an agreement establishing Akon City in Senegal, though plans for a similar project in Uganda have also been discussed. Speaking with Nick Cannon one month prior, he said the project was operating under “a 10-year building block,” meaning its planned construction was happening “in stages.”

What's the latest on Akon City?

This month, BBC News reported that plans for the Akon City project in Senegal had been called off, though a “realistic” endeavor involving Akon remained on the agenda. Mentioned in the report was the allegedly slow construction process in the region, including a lone “incomplete” building. It was previously reported that the city would have run on a cryptocurrency fittingly called Akoin.

What has Akon said about his Akon City plans?

Asked about Akon City during a recent conversation with a TMZ paparazzo in New York this week, Akon, who’s over halfway finished with his country album, called out what he described as “misinformation” about the project.

“Well, what I can tell you is the Akon City project is under attack,” he said. “The impact that it’s gonna do for Africa is kind of shaking up a lot of agendas, so you’re gonna see a lot of misinformation on the internet. I would advise that you know that it’s untrue. … It’s not gonna stop. It’s continuing.”

Elaborating further, Akon said the scope of the project has inspired people to “discredit it.” He also briefly acknowledged the speed of the construction process, all while vowing to push ahead.

“My purpose is to develop Africa, and that project is part of the development,” he added.
