Charli xcx's 'Miss Should Have Been Headliner' Coachella Sash Leads to Green Day Shade Speculation
People are taking this way, way, way too seriously.
As a devout disciple of both Green Day and Charli xcx, it brings me no pleasure to report that some fans appear to be going out of their way to take what should have been viewed as simply a playful (and certainly punk-minded) gesture way, way too seriously. The punk trio and pop auteur, who each boast zeitgeist-defining work in their repertoires, were both on the bill for the 2025 edition of Coachella, which wrapped its first of two weekends on Sunday with headliner-of-the-day Post Malone.
Billie Joe Armstrong and company headlined on Saturday, preceded on the main stage by Charli’s own Brat-focused set, complete with special guests including Billie Eilish and Lorde. Closing the evening on the main stage on Saturday was Travis Scott, who can currently be found on the cover of the latest print mag edition of Complex.
But it’s an assortment of photos included in Instagram updates from Charli that some have opted to zero in on, thus resulting in this very article and others like it. In several of the photos in question, Charli, whose Brat took home Best Dance/Electronic Album at this year’s Grammys, is seen wearing a sash that reads, “Miss Should Be Headliner.”
Again, it seems unlikely this was intended as anything but a playful and decidedly self-aware moment, one of many from across Charli’s journey to Brat. It would also be a bit silly for anyone to get genuinely upset about it, as GD themselves have several instances of prodding fellow artists and the powers that be alike across their own artistic journey, from Dookie to American Idiot and beyond. (Also, it should be pointed out here that Charli hasn't directly mentioned GD at all.)
For the Pop Disaster tour back in 2002, for example, GD was billed as the co-headliner alongside blink-182, leading to decades’ worth of speculation of a full-on rivalry between the two. In his recently released memoir, blink’s Mark Hoppus added more context to the situation, underscoring a sense of both respect and frustration over how GD members are said to have carried out their business on the now-mythical tour.
At any rate, this is actually meant to be one of those Here Are a Bunch of Embedded Reactions From the Platform Formerly Known as Twitter-style pieces, so we’ll make our way to that portion of the proceedings now, but not before I again point out that all of this is very, very silly.
