Megan Thee Stallion Says Her Persona Is 'Trying to Protect' Megan Pete in New Trailer for 'In Her Words' Documentary
The feature-length doc hits Prime Video on Halloween.
Megan Thee Stallion’s rise to undeniable superstardom is the subject of In Her Words, a new documentary from Amazon MGM Studios.
Wednesday, fans were given a look at TIME Studios and Roc Nation production with a two-minute trailer teasing what can be expected when the full film rolls out on Halloween. At the top of the new trailer, available above, we hear from Megan during a particularly hard time in her life and career, spurring a key question from the three-time Grammy winner that’s seemingly central to the doc at large.
“I feel like, how can I be Megan Thee Stallion when I’m not having fun?” Megan, who was then at a point of feeling like she needed to call off all her planned shows, says in the just-released trailer for the Nneka Onuorah-directed doc, produced in association with the filmmaker’s Nneka Productions.
In January, notably, Amazon MGM Studios inked a first-look deal with Onuorah. The director's past work includes The Same Difference and The Legend of the Underground.
“Music has always been in my life,” Megan says in the trailer. “I wouldn’t be here without my mom. My momma was like a gangster rapper. I was like, when I get older I really wanna be like her. That’s when I really started creating Megan Thee Stallion. That was when I was my happiest.”
In 2019, Megan’s mother, Holly Thomas, died. This left her “in shambles,” as seen in the trailer, and led her to feeling as though she had forgotten who she really was.
“When life started getting crazy, I didn’t have her,” Megan recalls, pointing to “a real breakdown” amid backlash in her career. But it was Megan Thee Stallion, the persona and Megan’s own creation, that ultimately rose to the occasion. In Megan’s own words, “I think Megan Thee Stallion is trying to protect Megan Pete.”
Megan Thee Stallion: In Her Words, produced by Carmen Cee and Mackenzie Hill, launches on Prime Video on Oct. 31. The 2024 Halloween season, which kicked off in earnest earlier this month with Megan's latest batch of annual pumpkinhead pics, will be further celebrated with a Hottieween event in Chicago.
