Sean Kingston’s mother, Janice Turner, has received a five-year federal prison sentence following her and her son’s conviction on fraud charges.

Turner was sentenced on Wednesday in Florida, per a report from The Sun Sentinel. When addressing the judge, Turner reportedly apologized and asked for “mercy” from the court.

In April, the U.S. Attorney’s Office of the Southern District of Florid announced that Kingston and Turner had been convicted of wire fraud and conspiracy to commit wire fraud. According to prosecutors, the two had defrauded luxury merch vendors out of more than $1 million in high-end goods, including a bulletproof Cadillac Escalade. At the time, it was noted that the two could be facing possible maximum sentences of as much as 20 years for each count.

Kingston is set to be sentenced next month. Speaking with reporters after Turner’s sentencing, her lawyer, Humberto Dominguez, pointed to “mixed feelings” about the outcome.

“We won on some points and we obviously lost on other points, all of which will obviously be handled on appeal,” he said, as seen in the WPLG Local 10 video above. “Overall, the judge tried to do what was right, what was fair.”

Dominguez also quoted from a letter Kingston sent to the judge, with the “Beautiful Girls” artist praising her as a “great mom” and a “loving, caring person.”

Last November, Kingston referred to 2024 as a year of “highs and lows,” with Chris Brown’s 11:11 (Deluxe) Grammy nominations cited as an example of the former. Kingston was credited as a writer on “Sensational,” a song off the album that earned a nomination for Best African Music Performance.
