YNW Melly's Murder Retrial to Move Forward With Previously Announced September Start Date
A Florida judge says Sept. 10 will indeed mark the beginning of Melly's new trial.
YNW Melly’s murder retrial will indeed be moving forward with its previously announced start date of Sept. 10.
Last week, per a report from the Sun-Sentinel, a Florida judge declined to push back the date amid appeals-related concerns. As such, jury selection will begin Sept. 10, with oral arguments presently set to start Sept. 16.
Back in July 2023, Melly’s initial trial, which found him accused of the 2018 killings of Christopher “YNW Juvy” Thomas Jr. and Anthony “YNW Sakchaser” Williams, ended with jurors “unable to reach a unanimous decision,” per a letter from the jury read in court at the time.
In November of last year, Melly was reported to have taken legal action over alleged “cruel treatment” while in custody under the Broward Sheriff’s Office. Also in 2024, Melly received a mention on Kendrick Lamar’s “Euphoria,” drawing a reaction from Melly himself.
“I’m a household name, just for the wrong shit,” Melly told TMZ.
Melly’s retrial has hit several snags over the past two years. In response to an initial pushback in August 2023, Melly was reported to have mouthed something about heading “home” to his lawyer while in court. The following month, he was denied bond, with a judge noting that prosecutors had adequately shown “the presumption of guilt is great” in the case.
Much earlier into his legal troubles, Melly was hit with a pair of civil suits from the YNW Juvy and YNW Sakchaser’s families.
