DJ Swamp Izzo says that Playboi Carti worked on MUSIC right up until the album’s release.

Izzo opened up about Carti’s creative process for the project in our recent sitdown with him, explaining that on the day of the project’s release, Carti wanted to continue going. “The album was done. Supposed to drop at 12,” said Izzo. “[Carti]’s like ‘Nah Swamp. Just go in the other room and just give me some more energy.’”

“We was just trying to make the album more and more exciting,” added Izzo. “We recorded all the way until the album came out. So when it dropped at seven, we were still in the studio on everything I love.”

Izzo also suggested that Playboi Carti’s next project, BABY BOI, is already finished. Though Carti just released MUSIC last month, the rapper has been heavily teasing that his next project is ready to go. Izzo confirmed that he’s already finished a ton of music for it.

“New music. He got over 50, 60 songs done,” he said. “Completed to his liking? I couldn’t say. But they’re done. If I was still in that mixtape era, we’d have Baby Boi one through nine. Fifteen years ago, we were so heartfelt on them exclusives. We couldn’t even sleep until we put it out before everybody.”

Izzo also revealed what the reactions that new listeners get to hearing his presence on Carti’s album feels like.

“For the newcomers, the first time hearing it, it's like a shocker because it's not Carti in a sense. I come with a hip-hop feel. I come from the mixtape era, so I bring that element to it,” said Izzo.  “A lot of samples—of course, the Rich Kidz—and just a lot of yelling and excitement over the songs.”

“For the people who are just hearing it for the first time and are not aware of mixtapes, I think that it’s a shocker,” Izzo continued. “‘What is this? This is not what we accustomed to.’ As I look at the comments, they listen again and again. Then they get it.”
