The world of late-night has been shaken up as of recent memory, but one writer on The Daily Show just got a very nice promotion.

On Monday, July 21, The Hollywood Reporter reported comedian and writer Josh Johnson is a new host on The Daily Show. Johnson has been a writer on The Daily Show since 2017 and an on-screen presence on the show since 2024. Johnson is set to anchor the show on Tuesday, June 22.

Johnson’s new hosting gig comes three years after Trevor Noah left his desk. Since then, The Daily Show has undergone a change in format, in which a rotating set of hosts take turns anchoring the show. Among these hosts are Ronny Chieng, Jordan Klepper, Michael Kosta and Desi Lydic.

Jon Stewart — who hosted the show from 1999 to 2015, and is often attributed for catapulting the show into a household name — made a return to the show back in 2024, making weekly appearances as an anchor. Last October, Stewart extended his contract, which now sees him among the hosts until December.

With nearly a decade in the game, Johnson is a seasoned late-night veteran. He got his start writing for The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon in 2016. Johnson has also appeared on Netflix’s The Comedy Line-Up. Additionally, he voiced the character Harry Buns on Disney’s Kiff.

Following the news, Johnson took to his Instagram page to express gratitude. “It’s my first time hosting anything on TV. Ever,” Johnson wrote in the post’s caption. “I’ve spent years writing behind the scenes, learning from truly great and talented people. Now, for three nights, I get to sit at the desk and do it myself.”

The news comes after The Late Show with Stephen Colbert was cancelled, with its final episode to air in May 2026. After this news, Stewart expressed uncertainty over the future of The Daily Show.

But for now, fans can enjoy new episodes of The Daily Show as they air nightly at 11 p.m. ET on Comedy Central and are available to stream on Paramount+ shortly after the broadcast.
