Malcolm-Jamal Warner: Costa Rica Officials Say Daughter Was 'Out of the Water' When Actor Drowned
New information has emerged in the fatal drowning of the beloved actor, musician, and poet.
UPDATED 7/25 1:55 p.m. ET: Malcolm-Jamal Warner’s daughter was already “out of the water” at the time of the Cosby Show actor’s fatal drowning, officials in Costa Rica have said, despite previous reports.
In a statement shared by People, a rep for Costa Rica's Judicial Investigation Agency is quoted as saying that while Warner had initially been "playing with his daughter at the seashore at one point," she was left "out of the water" prior to the tragic incident.
"It was at that moment that [Warner and a friend] were swept away by the current, and the friend managed to get out," the rep said, adding that Warner was ultimately pulled from the water by "several people on the beach."
Complex has reached out to Costa Rica's Judicial Investigation Agency for additional comment. This story may be further updated.

More tragic details about Malcolm-Jamal Warner’s untimely drowning death have been revealed.
The 54-year-old actor was swimming with his 8-year-old daughter on Sunday (July 20) on the coast of Costa Rica, a police source told ABC News.
According to the report, surfers spotted the actor and his daughter in an area known for dangerous rip currents and dove in to help. One surfer reportedly used his surfboard to bring Warner’s daughter to safety while a lifeguard brought Warner and another individual back to shore.
Warner was then given 45 minutes of CPR, but ultimately could not be resuscitated.
Costa Rican National Police also told ABC News that they formally identified Warner and attributed his cause of death to asphyxia.
TMZ previously reported that there were no lifeguards available to patrol the area due to a lack of resources.
Warner gained notoriety for his role as Theo Huxtable on the Cosby Show but left a lasting mark in the television, film, music, and theater worlds. In addition to his Emmy-nominated work as a young actor, Warner earned a Grammy in 2015 for his collaboration with Robert Glasper on a reinterpretation of Stevie Wonder’s “Jesus Children of America.”
His credits include Malcolm & Eddie, the Magic School Bus, American Horror Story: Freak Show, The Resident, Sons of Anarchy, American Crime Story: The People v. O.J. Simpson, and others.
Just weeks before his death, the actor spoke about his legacy on an episode of Hot & Bothered with Melyssa Ford.
“I remember my mother said to me one time that ‘Mr. Cosby gave you immortality,’” he said at the time. “So I know on one lane, there's legacy there … but then, because I've had this full life after [the Cosby Show], there's another lane of legacy that I get to leave, and I'm still working through that.”
“There is part of me that I will be able to leave this earth, you know, knowing and people knowing that I was a good person,” he said. “I talked to my dad, I talked to him yesterday and he said to me often, ‘You know, people love you and people always talking about, you know, your career and your success and all of that.’ He said, ‘But what really makes me the most proud is that you are a good person.’”
“But I'm a good person because my dad's a good person. That's a whole another thing,” Warner added. “Again, it is possible to walk through this world, and with all of the darkness in the world, it is possible to maintain your soul and be a good person.”
Warner is survived by his wife and 8-year-old daughter. The actor opted to keep both of their identities private prior to his death.
