Michael Che Issues 'SNL' Apology to Scarlett Johansson for Roast Beef Joke About Her
Last December, Che made Colin Jost read a line comparing his wife's genitalia to roast beef.
Michael Che apologized to Scarlett Johansson for a crude “roast beef” joke he made about her.
During the final episode of Saturday Night Live’s 50th season, Che brought out Johansson during “Weekend Update” to jokingly offer an on-air apology.
“Before I tell another joke, I wanna take this opportunity to apologize to someone I hurt,” said Che before bringing out the Jurassic World: Rebirth actress.
The moment took place during a “joke swap” segment with his co-host and Johansson’s husband, Colin Jost.
“[The] last time we did ‘Joke Swap,’ I made Colin do some tasteless jokes comparing your vagina to Costco roast beef,” he continued. “The fact is, I was just lashing out because I’m jealous. I’ve never even seen a human vagina. And notice I said human, because I once spent the summer on a farm.”
“Maybe I’m just embarrassed about my own body. I can’t even take my hoodie off during sex because I have more nipples than a pregnant dog,” he said through laughter.
“Yes, I have heard that about you,” Johansson replied.
The original joke saw Jost delivering a line written by Che for an episode of SNL that aired last December.
“Costco has removed the roast beef sandwich from its menu, but I ain’t trippin’,” Jost said through laughter. “I be eating roast beef every night since my wife had the kid.”
The cameras switched to a live reaction of Johansson standing outside of the doors of Studio 8H looking visibly shocked.
In a March interview with InStyle, Johansson laughed while calling the moment “vulgar” and “old-school gross.” She also said she was told ahead of time Che had written a vagina joke for the segment.
“I was like, 'I mean, it's a vagina joke, how bad could it be?'” Johansson told the magazine. “And then as soon as the Costco photo came up, I was like No! No, Michael!”
“The fact that it took on a full To Catch a Predator-style reveal or whatever,” she said of the camera ambush immediately after the joke. “That was so intense. All of a sudden, it was like a whole bunch of people holding up lights, and a guy with a video camera. They were waiting for me to react. I felt insane. I was like, ‘I think I'm going to faint.’”
During a separate interview with Vanity Fair in May, Johansson hinted at seeking payback.
“I feel like it’s almost my responsibility to come up with some way to burn Michael back. Retaliation, I’d say, should be expected,” she teased.
Further into the SNL episode, Che jokingly offered an apology to Jost, saying, “I’m sorry to Colin because I owe you everything. When Colin discovered me, I was selling crack outside. I’ve told thousands of jokes on ‘Update’ that have gotten dozens of laughs, but I’ve never said the three most important words of all: I love you.”
The episode marked Johansson’s seventh time hosting SNL, setting a record for the most hosting stints by a woman. She was joined by musical guest Bad Bunny, who made his third appearance on the show.
