Family Style Food Fest is coming to New York. On Saturday, May 17, the immersive dining festival that pairs top restaurants with coveted streetwear brands and live entertainment will take over the Box Factory at Industry City in Sunset Park, Brooklyn. Keith Lee will be the event's official host, while Awake New York mastermind Angelo Baque will serve as its artistic director. From 1pm to 9pm, fashionable food obsessives and their families and friends can taste the best of New York establishments like Shmackwich, L'industrie Pizzeria, Aunts et Uncles, Scarr's Pizza, Katz's Delicatessen x Pepsi, and Lucali. Select overseas restaurants will also have a footprint at Family Style, including Verdy’s Osaka spot Henry’s Pizza.
Food won’t be the only thing Family Style New York attendees are clamoring for. Many of the restaurants will also have limited edition collaborations with streetwear giants available in the event’s gift shop. While some of the biggest Family Style New York collabs are still under wraps, streetwear aficionados can look forward to event-only gear from Scarr’s x Awake New York, Henry’s Pizza x Verdy, Shmackwich x LAAMS, L'industrie Pizzeria x BBC, Buldak x Rokstar Chicken x VANDYTHEPINK, Forsyth Fire Escape x Nom Wah x Staple, Ayat x Kids Of Immigrants, and more. VIP tickets are $150 and permit purchasers to enter the VIP section to check out exclusive vendors serving free food and drinks. Those restaurants include Raku, Bonnie's, Russ & Daughters, and Kato from Los Angeles. VIP ticket holders can also access all the general admissions happenings.
Tickets can be purchased here.
With that mix of world class food and fashion in mind, these are some of the Family Style New York restaurants and brands Complex is most excited to see, sample, and cop from. Read up, then see you in Brooklyn.
Scarr's Pizza x Awake New York
Since opening in 2016, Scarr’s Pizza has become a downtown favorite. It serves an excellent traditional slice, as well as a very good Sicilian option, but is perhaps best loved for its incredible vegan pizza and vegan Caesar salad. Over the years, Scarr’s has also sold plenty of its own cool merch. At Family Style, keep an eye out for all of the above, including a limited edition collab with Awake New York and Family Style NYC artistic director, Angelo Baque, as well as specialty menu items only available at the festival.
Henry's Pizza x Verdy
With Henry’s Pizza, ComplexCon Hong Kong 2024 creative director Verdy brought New York style slices and pies to his hometown of Osaka, Japan. Like the artist and designer’s other projects, Girls Don’t Cry and Wasted Youth, it’s been a huge success. Now, Verdy is bringing Henry’s back to the city that inspired it, appearing at Family Style New York with specialty menu items and his own collaborative merch. No word on whether the Henry's x Verdy gear will feature Girls Don’t Cry, Wasted Youth, his beloved Visty character, or something else the creative mastermind’s cooked up, but you know it will be legit—and hard to get—no matter what.
Shmackwich x LAAMS
East Harlem invented the chop cheese. Then the whole city embraced it. But it took Shmackwich to elevate the gooey deli staple to a gourmet artform, all while maintaining respect for its Uptown roots. Like the chop cheese, Shmackwich is a true New York creation. Founded in 2020 by Midi (who also stars in this Family Style New York short film by @newyorknico), Sibi, and Jordan DiNoia, the purveyor of the #WagyuChopCheese now operates out of Chelsea’s Olly Olly Market, while popping out to cater events with world-renowned partners like Nike and Footlocker. No stranger to unique creations and next-level link-ups, Shmackwich is working with downtown everything-creative shop and de facto community center LAAMS on a collaboration to celebrate Family Style New York. With both collaborators having strong NYC roots and a mix-and-match, embrace-it-all ethos, look out for eclectic items built for the streets.
L'industrie Pizzeria x BBC
Tuscany-born Massimo Laveglia opened L'industrie Pizzeria in South Williamsburg in 2017. It quickly entered the chat about New York's best slice. Now with a second location in the West Village, L'industrie Pizzeria brings its ultra-thin slices to Family Style, where attendees can try its naturally leavened and fermented crust topped with gourmet ingredients like burrata, prosciutto di parma, or fig jam and bacon. In addition to slices, L'industrie Pizzeria will also unveil a merch collaboration with BBC in the Family Style gift shop.
Katz's Delicatessen x Pepsi
There’s no place on earth like Katz's Delicatessen. Katz's has been serving pastrami sandwiches, pickles, and other deli classics since 1888. This OG of all OGs will bring its sandwich game to Family Style New York, along with exclusive Katz’s x Pepsi T-shirts and tote bags. Beyond the limited edition merch, keep an eye out for Pepsi “chasers” who will be running down thirsty attendees to hand them free sodas.
Buldak x Rokstar Chicken x VANDYTHEPINK
Korean pop culture continues to rise in global prominence, becoming ever more influential and embedded in the discourse. Beyond K-Pop and Korean film and TV, fashion and food are huge parts of that ascendance. Of course, Family Style New York has those categories covered. Enter Buldak. For this Family Style, the spicy ramen and hot sauce purveyor extraordinaire has linked with Korean fried chicken phenom Rokstar Chicken and Korean-American streetwear designer VANDYTHEPINK on custom menu items featuring Buldak sauces, as well as a T-shirt and trucker hat. Even better, booth attendees can receive the merch and Buldak sauces for free. This is a big one, a true trifecta for the senses.
Forsyth Fire Escape x Nom Wah x Staple
With all the restaurants gathered under the Family Style New York banner, there are many unique stories. But there's only one restaurant that started out serving its food on a fire escape. That's really how Forsyth Fire Escape kicked things off, lowering a bucket down to the street so people could purchase its Scallion Pancake Burritos. With Family Style in mind, Forsyth Fire Escape has connected with another unique restaurant, albeit one with a slightly more traditional story. That would be Nom Wah, the Downtown dim sum institution that first opened in 1920 as a tea parlor and bakery at 13-15 Doyers St., then known as the "Bloody Angle," due to its sharp corner and reputation for gang fights. Together, the two restaurants will combine innovation and tradition on some unprecedented specialty menu items. As if that weren't enough, Forsyth Fire Escape and Nom Wah have also grouped with Jeff Staple, a titan of the streetwear game, on custom merch to commemorate the occasion. After being in the game for almost 30 years, Staple and his signature label are currently in the middle of another hot streak, recently opening a brand new flagship store at 21 Mercer in SoHo, where it dropped the much sought-after Brooks x Staple Adrenaline 4 GTS.
Potluck Club x Wheat Thins & Triscuit
Restaurateur Cory Ng is a Cantonese-American born and raised in New York's Chinatown. Professionally, he's here to put on for his neighborhood, opening his restaurant, Potluck Club, in 2022 on Chrystie Street, right at the border between Chinatown and the Lower East Side. It's a strategic placement that also represents Potluck Club's perspective on food, as it offers Hong Kong-inspired Cantonese-American favorites with slight twists. That makes it the perfect spot to partner with Wheat Thins and Triscuit at Family Style New York. For the festival, Ng created five globally inspired recipes to pair with the versatility and delicious taste of the crackers. Those include American Onion Dip, Mexican Shrimp Dip, and NYC Everything Bagel Dip Wheat Thins, and Cantonese Salmon Bite and Italian Fig and Prosciutto Bite Triscuits. Attendees can sample the five custom recipes for free at the Wheat Thins and Triscuit footprint next to the Potluck Club tent. There will also be Snack Passports, icebreaker conversation cards, and interactive trivia moments where guests can play to win an exclusive, custom insulated tote bag.
Kith Treats x ?
Real heads know that Kith sells much more than rare sneakers and streetwear. It also offers ice cream, cereal, and waffles through Kith Treats. The sneaker-inspired confectionery will be on-hand at Family Style New York, whipping up its signature sweet treats alongside specialty menu items and an exceptional limited collab that’s still under wraps. Kith only collaborates with the best, so this won’t be one to miss, even if we can’t tell you what it is just yet.
Win Son x Brigade
Bushwick Taiwanese-American spot Win Son is coming to Family Style New York with its signature menu of savory bao, buns, noodles, scallion pancakes, and fried rice, along with a Brigade collaboration. Just like Win Son, Brigade is a New York company to its core, with a mission to build community over commodity. Together, they’ll serve up something special.
Ayat x Kids of Immigrants
In a Palestinian household, freshly baked bread is a symbol of hospitality and togetherness. Ayat takes that ethos and extends it to all, welcoming guests with its authentic pita, delicious falafel, and fragrant za'atar. That formula has been a hit, allowing Ayat to expand across New York and into New Jersey and Pennsylvania. At Family Style, Ayat will also collaborate with Kids of Immigrants on merchandise available in the festival gift shop. Kids of Immigrants is surging off the success of its Nike Air Max Sunder collaboration, which Complex named the third best sneaker of 2024. With momentum behind both collaborators, and messages that celebrate family, roots, immigration, and openness, their Family Style gear should look fresh and deliver a potent message.
Aunts et Uncles x Barriers Worldwide
Aunts et Uncles keeps Flatbush fed with its array of vegan Caribbean-American fare. It also keeps the neighborhood fitted, well-read, and decorated with its dry goods wing, which sells a mix of apparel, books, home decor, and gifts. To celebrate its Family Style New York appearance, Aunts et Uncles is collaborating with Black-owned streetwear label Barriers Worldwide. Stay tuned for a cultural capsule with a historical narrative that’s dripping with style.
Café Colmado x Taller De Rafa
Café Colmado is a cafecito Latino on New York’s Lower East Side. It serves up a select variety of Caribbean and Latin American coffee and pastries on the daily. With a comfortable inside space and a big outdoor patio, Café Colmado has customers covered on cold mornings or sunny afternoons. For Family Style, the coffee shop will connect with Bronx creative atelier Taller De Rafa on limited edition merch. Helmed by brother-sister duo Rafa and Genesis Valleon, Taller De Rafa produces innovative sweatsuits, T-shirts, and clever accessories, while also housing the Fyve Senses™ events production agency. When this cafecito and atelier link, be ready for merch that has a fresh take on Latino heritage in New York, with the possibility of some unusual accessories.
Casamigos x Jonny’s Pizza
For Family Style New York, Casamigos is teaming with Jonny's Pizza on a Margs & Margs experience. The concept unites two crowd favorites—Margherita pizza and Casamigos margaritas—in a delicious, unexpected combo. Casamigos is also the Featured Tequila of Family Style New York, allowing guests to enjoy an exceptional tasting experience along with the debut of limited, exclusive merch, including shakers, trucker hats, tees, and bandanas. The first 1,000 guests to visit the Casamigos booth for a sample can also grab a pizza redemption card for a complimentary slice from Jonny's. Don't miss out.
DoorDash
DoorDash is coming to Family Style New York, where it’s partnering with top restaurants, including Russ & Daughters, Win Son Bakery, and 7th Street Burger, to give DashPass subscribers a range of perks. At Family Style, DashPass subscribers can use the DoorDash Fast Pass lane to skip lines at participating spots and to snag free, festival-exclusive merch.
Lucali
Here it is, Lucali, another contender for best pizza in New York, appearing at Family Style. Lucali is a Carroll Gardens wood-fired spot known for long-but-worth-it waits, simple pies, and excellent crust. Is it the best? Is it all city? Better than the other top pizzerias coming to Family Style? You’ll have to roll through and decide for yourself. Either way, you’ll enjoy what you get. Plus, Family Style is making an exclusive event T-shirt with Lucali that will be available in the merch store.
Dhamaka & Rowdy Rooster
Sister restaurants Dhamaka and Rowdy Rooster both offer lesser-known Indian fare, with the former focused on provincial cuisine and the latter on Indian fried chicken and sandwiches. Helmed by chef and partner Chintan Pandya and restaurateur Roni Mazumdar, both spots have made big names for themselves bringing “forgotten” dishes to New York diners, all packed with plenty of flavor, spice, and Subcontinental heat. At Family Style, Dhamaka and Rowdy Rooster will double down on the obscure, serving specialty menu items to the hungry and adventurous.
Blackbird
Blackbird, a loyalty company that rewards people who love restaurants, is partnering with Family Style New York to allow diners to test its app. Attendees who download Blackbird by scanning its QR code at Family Style will get $20 in credit to use at participating restaurants at the festival and 100% $FLY back on every purchase (Blackbird currency). Those credits do not expire and can be used at restaurants beyond Family Style. Outside of Family Style New York, diners can use Blackbird to find restaurants they like, connect with those restaurants, and DM them to book reservations. The more you go, the better things get with Blackbird.
