Robert Pattinson won't return as Bruce Wayne and his vigilante alter-ego Batman until 2027.

As reported by Variety, Warner Brothers has announced that the sequel to Matt Reeves' 2022 superhero hit The Batman has been pushed back a year from Oct. 2, 2026, to Oct. 1, 2027. Tentatively titled The Batman — Part II, the sequel was announced in 2022 with lead star Pattinson and writer-director Reeves returning. It was initially scheduled for release in October 2025 but was delayed by Warner Brothers earlier this year.

Fans of Pattinson do have something to celebrate, however, as Warner Bros. has made further adjustments to its schedule by pushing up the release date of Bong Joon-ho's Mickey 17. That movie, the first from Joon-ho since he picked up Best Director and Best Picture for Parasite at the 92nd Academy Awards, will now debut on March 7, 2025. Ryan Coogler's Sinners, starring Michael B. Jordan, has swapped dates with Mickey 17 and will arrive on April 18, 2025. The decision comes down to allowing Mickey 17 to play on Imax screens for longer.

Another major release date announcement from the studio comes with the confirmation that director Alejandro González Iñárritu's new movie Judy, starring Tom Cruise, will open in Imax on Oct. 2, 2026, the date originally held for The Batman 2. Not much is known about the latest film from Iñárritu, the director of Birdman and The Revenant, but it is expected to star Cruise as "the most powerful man in the world" on a mission to "prove he is humanity's savior before the disaster he's unleashed destroys everything." Cruise's co-stars in the movie include Sandra Hüller, John Goodman, Michael Stuhlbarg, Jesse Plemons, Sophie Wilde, and Riz Ahmed.

In a recent chat with The Batman star Zoë Kravitz for Variety, Reeves admitted that the writing process for The Batman 2 has been slow but said that progress was being made and he hopes to start shooting next year. Speaking with Digital Spy this month, he teased the plot for the highly-anticipated sequel.

"As we enter into the next movie, there's a lot more grey," Reeves shared. "There's a lot more people at odds. There’s a lot more division in the city. It's a lot more like our world is now, there's a lot of turmoil because people are in their camps and they're not communicating. How does Batman fit into that? Where do you fit? It's not as clear as going, 'Oh yeah, bad guy, I go after bad guys.' And when things are in grey, it makes it very hard to be Batman, so this is part of the challenge as we enter it."

In addition to the writing process, Pattinson has a busy schedule over the next few years. He's set to star in Kristoffer Borgli's The Drama opposite Zendaya, Lynne Ramsay's Die, My Love, and Christopher Nolan's The Odyssey, which will also arrive in 2027.
