Warner Bros. is interested in Transformers: Rise of the Beasts filmmaker Steven Caple Jr. to direct the studio's forthcoming I Am Legend sequel, Deadline reports.

Although no deal has been made, Warner Bros. is hoping to reunite I Am Legend 2 star Michael B. Jordan with Caple. The pair previously worked together on 2018's Creed II. The news arrives a day after screenwriter Akiva Goldsman teased the film at Comic-Con following a meeting with Will Smith and Jordan.

“The world returns in a way that is kind of spectacular – an exciting playground for all of us – not your father’s I Am Legend,” Goldsman shared, adding that Smith's character would be brought back to life for the sequel. “We’re sequelizing the alternative cut,” Golsman said. “Where Will lives and things don’t go well for humanity.”

Back in December, Smith hinted that the studio was considering to take a bit of a departure from how the original movie ended.

“So we are going with the mythology of the DVD version where my character lived,” he said. “I can’t tell you any more.”

Released on Dec. 14, 2007, I Am Legend brought home the then-largest-ever box office opening for a non-Christmas film released in December. The film would go on to be the seventh-highest grossing film of 2007, earning a combined total of $585 million with $256 million coming domestically and $329 million internationally.
