There have been 11 major Superman movies since 1978.

Many actors have tried to make the role their own, from Christopher Reeve (who most defined the character) to Henry Cavill.

The superhero has been reimagined several times; 2013's Man of Steel comes to mind. So you never know how audiences will react to another revision.

It turns out there's still an audience appetite for Superman, at least the 2025 version played by David Corenswet.

The early box office totals have given Warner Bros. a big boost.

According to Market Watch, Superman's box office worldwide was $217 million during its debut weekend, making it a "smash."

The film is likely enjoying good word of mouth, as its Rotten Tomatoes audience score was 93% as of July 15.

Superman's box office was the third-highest U.S. debut for a movie in 2025, according to The Verge.

"Loved it! From the costumes to the character development to the engaging pacing, this movie was a much welcome shift for DC’s new direction," wrote one fan on the Rotten Tomatoes site.

"The most comic book movie version of Superman yet. I loved it!" wrote another.

The strong box office returns are propelling a continued turnaround for Warner Bros., which has now had "five straight No. 1 hits," starting in April with A Minecraft Movie, Market Watch reported.

James Gunn's Superman cost $225 million to make, so the film almost turned a profit after just one weekend, per the outlet.

“The top 10 markets were pretty standard. L.A., New York, Dallas, Chicago and San Francisco were some of the top markets. But when I was looking at the top 10 locations, something that caught my eye was there were two theaters in Florida, one in Orlando and one in Miami, and one theater in Atlanta that cracked the top 10 locations,” Rebecca Rubin, Variety's box office expert, said to that publication.

“Again, usually [the top 10] are populated by theaters in L.A., New York and Texas. I thought it was interesting that those Southern venues were some of the highest-grossing. And so it played pretty evenly across the country.”
