‘Bachelor in Paradise’ Fans Are Not Feeling the New Format
Some fans think BIP is trying to be 'Love Island.'
The 10th season of Bachelor in Paradise is getting blistering reviews online.
The old format was scrapped for a version that some fans are comparing to Love Island and Survivor. The location was switched to Costa Rica.
The complaints on social media are many.
Some fans are upset that the show won't be bringing in any new contestants, as host Jesse Palmer revealed on August 4. Instead, the contestants will compete for a $500,000 prize through relationship tests, as they are already paired up, although some couples are stronger than others.
"This season was already trash before the twist and now it’s beyond repair. Bring back my silly little show in Mexico…it didn’t need to be revamped!" wrote one fan after the game show-like twist was announced.
"Making the show about money completely defeats the purpose. This is supposed to be about love, it’s not supposed to be a competition," another fan wrote.
The show’s decision to mix “goldens” — the name given to seniors from the Golden Bachelor and Golden Bachelorette — with younger contestants has received split reaction, although so far there hasn’t been any cross-generational romance, save for April Kirkwood getting a joke kiss and giving her rose to a younger contestant so he could have another chance at love.
"I already miss the old format like it was good the way it was, but ofc they tryna compete with Love Island," a woman wrote.
Scott Teti, the showrunner, discussed the changes to The Hollywood Reporter.
“The focus and conceit is to continue to help these people find love,” Teti said, adding, “But there’s twists, there’s turns and there’s certainly some format changes that shake things up.”
Also causing controversy: The quality of the men on the show. Some fans are upset by the behavior of Brian, whose relationship with Parisa seems increasingly toxic, and others are unhappy that Jeremy hasn’t let Bailey know that he was secretly trying to engineer Susie’s return.
"Brian is straight up MEAN to Parisa….get him off my screen," wrote one fan.
Fans also believe there weren’t enough new contestants being brought in throughout the show to give people a realistic chance at love, especially if their initial pairing doesn’t seem to be working out. This has led to some popular contestants leaving the show after very short appearances and others being stuck with people not that into them because there isn't anyone else around.
Finally, many fans were upset by the elimination round on August 4, which sent goldens Gary Levingston and Leslie Fhima packing just when they were starting to forge a connection. Levingston, in particular, was a popular addition to the show due to his lively personality.
Fans are unloading all of these criticisms and more on X and on the show’s Facebook page.
