Dylan O'Brien's sibling, Julz O'Brien, said they aren't close despite their actor brother's public statements.

Julz had to clear the air regarding the relationship with their brother Dylan after an interview the latter did in 2024 resurfaced. In that interview, Dylan claimed he was "grateful" to know trans people, including his "nonbinary" sibling Julz, adding that having queer people in his life "deepens my experience in this world.”

The interview was reposted by Gay Times last week, prompting Julz to shed some light in the post's comments section.

"I'm actually trans masc and go by he/they pronouns," Julz wrote. "He didn't check in when I had top surgery [...] He didn't even wish me happy bday last week! But glad I could deepen his experience in this world and make the world love him that much more."

Julz added, "Kinda funny that this article didn't ask me for a single thing about myself? It's about me and uses my photo. I'm not even tagged."

Despite the apparent strain, Julz shouted out their younger brother numerous times on his birthday, and once called Dylan their "very first best friend."

The original interview was pinned to Dylan's starring role in the queer thriller Ponyboi. At the time, Dylan said how fortunate he was to learn more about the queer and trans community while also highlighting how much he learned from his co-star River Gallo, who played a gender-nonconforming character in the film.

"This was such an enlightening experience for me," Dylan said about Gallo. "They are someone that I hold so dearly to me now too that I'll have with me for the rest of my life as a friend."
