The world’s best athletes put on a performance like no other during the Olympic Games Paris 2024. Showcasing endurance, strength, power and grit for a little more than two weeks, sports lovers near and far were both entertained and in awe.
To memorialize each electrifying moment, Samsung has launched the Galaxy Z Flip6 Olympic Edition. The new smartphone comes equipped with all the trimmings of modern-day technology, along with the convenience of folding to fit conveniently into your pocket. Decked out with the Olympic rings and Paralympic agitos in gold, the Galaxy Z Flip6 is the first-ever Olympic Edition phone to feature Galaxy AI. For athletes, this is a game changer.
This Galaxy AI allows Olympians to replay their performances in slow motion, making it easier to refine their technique. It also provides a sick photo assistant, which enables athletes to get the perfect shot every time, by resizing, repositioning or even getting rid of unwanted objects within photos.
And yes, this is ideal for anyone who fancies themselves as detail-oriented, but if you’re someone who also wants the absolute best shot, this phone comes in handy as well.
Musician and artist Jaden Smith and two-time Olympic medalist Jagger Eaton are both creatives. So, when the two learned of the new Galaxy Z Flip6 Olympic Edition smartphone, it was a no-brainer that they’d link up to showcase the phone’s best features. In a video made specifically for the games, Jagger and Jaden are skateboarding, honoring the sport’s second appearance in the Summer edition of the Olympic Games. Wanting to snap a selfie, Jaden can be seen waving his hand in front of the camera and boom! Instantly, snapping some dope pics of himself and Jagger.
While Jaden may be a casual skater and Jagger a newly-minted silver-medalist, who says “to get a medal is a surreal moment and to do it twice just feels like a fairytale,” the two were able to showcase how this pocket-size device doesn’t skimp on what’s most important for today’s smartphone users, which is crisp photos and individuality.
In the midst of the Olympics, Complex caught up with Jagger and Jaden to talk skateboarding, smartphones and of course, the Olympic Games Paris 2024.
How excited are you to compete in the Olympics? What are you feeling? What are you looking forward to?
Jagger Eaton: I’m excited to be competing in my second Games. I feel relaxed and prepared for the task at hand. I’m really looking forward to having my family here to watch, as it’s been years since they have watched me compete.
Do you remember where you were when you learned skateboarding would be an Olympic sport? What were your thoughts?
JE: When I found out that skateboarding made it into the Olympic Games it was 2019 and I was home in Arizona. The first thing I did was call my dad and we were ecstatic. The Olympic Games is amazing for every sport and for skateboarders to get the chance to play for their country is amazing.
Which sport are you most excited about in the Olympics this year, Jaden?
Jaden Smith: I'm definitely excited about skateboarding being in the Olympics. We won! We did it! All of us that got kicked out of everywhere, people trying to disrespect us saying this isn’t a sport or this will never be a sport. So, for it to be at the Olympics as a sport, I can't believe it took this long. I'm so happy to see it there. My mind is just blown. I feel amazing.
When did you start skateboarding?
JS: I've been skateboarding since I was a kid. I've just never gotten better.
Are you taking it more seriously since it's in the Olympics?
JS: Me? No. It's always been a means of transportation for me, but also something really fun that I've done. When I’m in New York, it’s a way of life for me.
How was it working with Jaden on this video that’s sending you off to the Olympics?
JE: Working with Jaden was the experience of a lifetime. I’ve always been a fan of his music and projects, so meeting him in person was super rad.
Did you enjoy working with Jagger?
JS: Jagger's my homie. Making this video with him was an amazing experience - he’s a talented athlete, amazing skater and he's a good guy.
Mentally, how did you prepare for the Olympics? Did you stay off of social media, did you take walks to clear your head after practice? What did you do to remain mentally strong?
JE: I did everything I could to maintain my focus and mental clarity. I took a step back from social media, read a ton, worked on my relationships, and maintained a great diet.
Cool. So, we’re here, in part, because of your work with Samsung. Tell me about it.
JE: Being part of Team Samsung Galaxy is special. Samsung’s message for Paris 2024 is that “Open always wins,” and I couldn’t agree more. An open mindset drives you to victory and I truly believe that when we’re open to fresh ideas and experiences, we always win.
Jaden?
JS: I love Samsung. I've been partnered with them for a while and I love their products and the opportunities that we get to create together. I love the work we’ve done together on charities. I like to partner with organizations that believe in the bigger missions that I also believe in, and Samsung has definitely done that for me.
Very dope. What would you say is your favorite feature of the Samsung Galaxy Z Flip6 Olympic Edition?
JS: My favorite feature would have to be what I like to call the high-five photo where you put out your hand and you put the five fingers out and it takes a photo for you.
Very cool. Are you a big selfie person?
JS: Yeah, I am. I love selfies. I was at the Coliseum the other day and there was no one there to take a photo for me, so I just put my phone down, opened it up, and put my hand out and took some photos of myself. I think for traveling or when you're by yourself, it's perfect for that.
JE: The FlexCam feature is my absolute favorite! As someone who is incredibly detailed, the camera on the Samsung Galaxy Z Flip6 Olympic Edition is so critical when filming skate tricks.
I don't have a Samsung, but I'm giving serious thought to getting one. If we were in an elevator and I saw you with your Samsung Galaxy Z Flip6 Olympic Edition, what would be your elevator pitch to get me to become team Samsung?
JS: I think my elevator pitch would be, Hey, do you like photos?
Yes.
JS: If you really care about photos, I’d say this is the best smartphone that you can fit in your pocket. If you like individuality, I feel like with this product you can individualize your experience more so than any other products that I've worked with.
Pretty solid elevator pitch.
JS: Also, do you like technology, because of the aspects of AI that's being introduced into this. My phone does stuff that I used to go to special effects houses to do, and I haven't seen that before. I think that would be my sales pitch. Do you like photos? Do you like technology? If so, this is the best.
What about you, Jagger? How would you sell the new Samsung Galaxy Z Flip6 Olympic Edition?
JE: My elevator pitch to anyone interested in converting to Samsung would be for them to consider what a special, user-friendly experience Samsung provides. [Take for instance] FlexWindow, which enables AI-assisted functions without opening the device. Samsung is really pushing the limits of the user experience. On top of that, the Samsung Galaxy Z Flip6 Olympic Edition fits in your pocket perfectly while I skate!
Jaden Smith and Jagger Eaton may come from different worlds, but they respect one another’s craft and came together to share in their mutual love of creativity and skateboarding. And with the help of the Samsung Galaxy Z Flip6 Olympic Edition, anyone can take their innovation and imagination to new heights.
