On their website, FaZe Clan describes themselves as “the center of gaming, sports, culture, and entertainment, contributing to how the next generation consumes content, plays, and shops.” This mission statement specifies that it’s “one of the world’s most prominent and influential gaming organizations known for its disruptive original content and hyper-engaged global fanbase of 250 million combined across social platforms.”

Several of these words do seem indicative of FaZe’s influence and their drama: prominent, disruptive, and hyper-engaged.

FaZe’d Up

FaZe formed in 2010 as FaZe Sniping with founding members ClipZ (Eric Rivera), House Cat (Jeff Emann), and Resistance (Ben Christenson), who first became known for trickshotting in Call of Duty (specifically Modern Warfare 2). Soon, Ted “Fakie” joined the clan, and they began their popular ILLCAMS series, an assortment of videos highlighting their craziest trickshots.

By 2012, FaZe Clan had a million subscribers and became one of the first big gaming YouTube channels. From there, things snowballed: FaZe had teams in esports competitions in 2012, a shared home in New York in 2014, investors in 2015, European esports teams in 2016, another shared home in Los Angeles in 2017 and a major win at the ELeague CS:GO Premier in 2017, corporate structure in 2018, several investors in 2019, a film release in 2020, a feature on the cover of Sports Illustrated as the first-ever esports team in 2021, and public stocks available in 2022.

An Org Out Of Control

Around then is when things began to spiral out of control. In 2021, some of the members of FaZe Clan became involved with “pump and dump” cryptocurrency schemes, leading to some members being suspended and at least one member being removed. In 2023, the price of FaZe’s stock dropped and received an order for delisting.

There were other major financial changes at FaZe to help save the brand, including a layoff of 20 percent of the staff, some important members of the board resigning, and a change of CEO. By the end of 2023, FaZe Clan had been bought by GameSquare Holdings. And in April 2024, FaZe went through a restructuring of its members—kicking out more than half of their teammates with little warning—and its content, bringing content creation back to the front and pushing competitive esports gameplay to the back.

FaZe Rising From The Ashes

So now, there are 18 members of FaZe Clan making content primarily on Twitch and YouTube. In the esports division, FaZe has 13 competitive teams, with at least 35 players representing FaZe around the world. Most of the members seem optimistic about the organization’s future. There has been talk about more global reach, more diverse content creation across various platforms, and more focus on esports as well. Only time will tell if the boys will be able to pull it all off, but after seeing how they have struggled and gotten back up, viewers are hopeful they will rebuild and be stronger than ever.

But wait, just who’s in FaZe Clan now? Who are the group’s biggest names and brightest stars? This is your quick primer on the FaZe Clan boys.

He addressed the FaZe restructuring in this April 2024 video, saying, “I’m ready to run through a brick f**king wall for this team. Being picked as one of the [18] is one of the most humbling, one of the most amazing feelings I’ve ever felt. And I will continue to represent FaZe in the best possible way.”

He said in this April 2024 video, “No team is perfect, but those boys, they are very passionate about FaZe, and I am too. […] I’m loving this direction that it’s going. I understand that I still have to continue to do my part, still create content, still be impactful, still be within the community, but for right now, it’s full steam ahead for FaZe.”

Role in the Clan: Josh "YourRage" is one of the newer members of FaZe, having joined in 2023. His content mostly features collaborations with other content creators such as Kai Cenat, Duke Dennis, Ski Mask the Slump God, and Im_Dontai. He spoke in a stream about the changes to FaZe and didn’t seem happy about either the shape it was taking or the way that audience members were reacting.

Zoomaa

Twitch Followers: 387,000

YouTube Subscribers: 125,000

Normally Streams: Call of Duty, Just Chatting, Grand Theft Auto

Role in the Clan: Thomas "Zoomaa" Paparatto has one of the more complicated histories with FaZe: he initially joined in 2015 and played on their Call of Duty esports team until 2019, when he went to play with the New York Subliners until he retired from professional gaming altogether because of a thumb injury in 2021. He then rejoined FaZe after the success of his Call of Duty podcast, “The Flank.” He now streams daily, mostly showing Call of Duty content, but he also engages with his audience through Just Chatting and IRL streams.
