Chris Rock's Brother Tony Calls New Will Smith Album 'Piece of Sh*t' and 'Trash,' Refuses to Listen
Don't expect Tony Rock to find anything to love off Will's 'Based on a True Story.'
Tony Rock, despite not having actually listened to it and, in fact, going so far as to say that he refuses to do so, considers Will Smith’s recently released new album a “piece of shit.” The TMZ-shared remarks from Chris Rock’s brother come less than a month after the release of Based on a True Story, Will’s first new album since 2005’s Lost and Found.
Speaking with a paparazzo at LAX on Monday, Rock, whose Rock the World special was released last November, said now was “a great time to be a comic” before bringing up Smith’s album.
“Will Smith has an album out and it’s a piece of shit and he addresses the Oscars,” Rock said, reiterating his assertion that now is a good time for comics.
As previously reported, Smith’s BOATS does indeed see the Oscar and Grammy winner addressing the larger controversurrounding sy The Slap, particularly on album intro “Int. Barbershop - Day,” featuring DJ Jazzy Jeff and B. Simone. From Rock’s perspective, the topics mention on the album gives him “leeway” in terms of also discussing the 2022-dominating incident.
“Everybody keeps telling me to stop talking about it but then he fucking puts it on a song,” Rock said. “So that gives me leeway to talk about it again. Album’s trash. I’m just assuming. I haven’t listened to it. I refuse to listen to it.”
Rock continued, saying that Smith was “trying to sell a shitty album,” although he also managed to tuck in praise for the DJ Jazzy Jeff and Fresh Prince track “Brand New Funk,” circa 1987.
“This album is probably shitty as fuck because I haven’t heard anything about it other than ‘Oh, he addresses your brother,’” Rock added. “If that’s the only selling point, that’s a shitty album.”
Later, Rock shot down any suggestion that Chris or Will could ever “be friends,” though no one involved in The Slap is any worse for wear, at least not financially.
“All of us are walking in the bank on Monday with smiles on our faces,” he said.
In a recent interview with Minou Itseli for Complex UK, Smith cited “Interior - Barbershop Day” as a personal favorite off his new album, noting it was inspired by a scene from Coming to America starring Eddie Murphy and Arsenio Hall.
“They’re all talking about me, and I even play a character that’s mad at me!” Smith said at the time. “It’s like rapping meets acting as an homage to one of my favorite movie moments.”
