Husband of Cop Killed on 9/11 Sends Award Back to 'Glamour' After It Was Also Given to Caitlyn Jenner

When Caitlyn Jenner received the Woman of the Year award from Glamour magazine earlier this year, her peers were quick to congratulate her and champion the pressing societal issues she’s recently been working quite hard to bring into the mainstream conversation. However, James Smith apparently wasn’t really feeling it, as revealed by his baffling decision to FedEx the same award back to the magazine in some sort of protest act.

Smith is the husband of Moira Smith, a New York Police Department officer who was killed on September 11, 2001 while helping people evacuate from the World Trade Center. Moira Smith was posthumously awarded the Woman of the Year distinction in 2001, though her husband has now rescinded that distinction by pairing the FedExed award with a pretty transphobic open letter to Glamour’s editor-in-chief Cindi Leive, excerpted below via Jezebel:

Thankfully, Glamour is standing by their decision to honor Caitlyn Jenner with the Woman of the Year award. "We were proud to honor his wife . . . in 2001, and we stand by our decision to honor Caitlyn Jenner," a Glamour spokesperson tells the New York Post. "Glamour’s Women of the Year Awards recognize women with a variety of backgrounds and experiences."
