“This underdog has seen his last day.”

These words, delivered in the opening seconds of the just-released trailer for Lionsgate’s Sundance-premiered Freaky Tales, give us a good idea what’s at stake for at least one of the characters in Anna Boden and Ryan Fleck’s sprawling Oakland period piece.

Set in 1987, the film, led by Pedro Pascal and narrated by Too Short, brings together multiple interconnected stories for an anthology experience boasting no less than one bloody showdown with a sword-wielding Jay Ellis. The Insecure and Top Gun: Maverick alum plays former Golden State Warriors star Sleepy Floyd.

Pedro’s character, Clint, finds himself dealing with the escalating difficulties of a purported “one more job” promise that proves to be more than a bit misleading. Joining Pascal, Ellis, and Short in the cast are Ben Mendelsohn, the late Angus Cloud, Normani, Dominique Thorne, Ji-young Yoo, Jack Champion, Keir Gilchrist, and more.

Freaky Tales, which shares a title with a Too Short track originally released in '87, is slated for an April 4 theatrical release. Up top, catch the action-comedy's new red band trailer.

For Pedro, the Freaky Tales rollout comes amid an especially busy year. The Emmy and Globe-nominated actor’s 2025 is also set to see the release of Matt Shakman’s The Fantastic Four: First Steps with Vanessa Kirby and Celine Song’s Materialists with Dakota Johnson, not to mention the second season of HBO’s The Last of Us.
