Abe Simpson, no doubt one of the meme-iest characters in American pop culture history, is at it again.

Surely you’ve seen what I’m talking about on X in recent days, with the meme format in question’s spread reminiscent of the pre-Musk Twitter era. For those unfamiliar, the setup is simple: The Simpsons character Abe, a.k.a. the incomparably memeable Grampa Simpson, is seen in a classic episode ("The Lemon Tree") from Season 6 of the long-running animated series enthusiastically recounting a story to a group of children.

In the episode, the story is focused on the history of Springfield’s coveted lemon tree. In the meme, the story varies but generally remains under the umbrella of “Things Millennials Remember Very Clearly But Are Hesitant to Admit Because It Ages Them.” Lemons, tragically, are not part of such discussions.

For Abe, this is all par for the course. The character, whose son Homer is no stranger to memedom in his own right, has frequently been made the subject of evergreen memes, namely Old Man Yells at Cloud and that still-prevalent clip of him immediately exiting a secret burlesque house after entering and seeing his grandson, Bart, working the door.

Below, as usual, we’ve rounded up an assortment of examples of this particular meme in action. As nostalgia is the focus here, it’s worth pointing out, and always is, that we should all be careful with nostalgia. Like any drug, it’s all fun and games and seemingly harmless until, well, it’s not. A little goes a long way. To be totally lost in nostalgia is to be lost in the most deceptively crafted sauce imaginable. How can we move forward if we’re always facing the wrong direction?

At any rate, memes. You’re here for the memes. Find those below. Of course, trying to search X on your own for relevant and recent memes of this variety is a frustratingly futile task as the platform is essentially worthless at this point. Enjoy what’s left of the fun of yesteryear while you still can.
