'Star Wars: The Force Awakens' Crushes 'Avatar' to Become the Biggest Movie of All Time in North America

Sorry, James Cameron. But Star Wars: The Force Awakens is now (thankfully) the biggest movie ever in North America. The J.J. Abrams-helmed franchise saver surpassed the Avatar record on Wednesday with a total domestic gross of $758.2 million, according to the Hollywood Reporter. The Force Awakens, predictably enough, managed to reach that impressive haul in just 20 days.

The film has proven both a critical and commercial juggernaut, with its current Rotten Tomatoes average still resting around 93 percent. Avatar, six years after its still-impressive initial box office run, has now leveled out with critics at a commendable 83 percent. Cameron's 22nd century epic, which bowed in theaters in December of 2009, pulled $750 million during its seven-month theatrical run before bagging another $10 million with a subsequent rerelease.

Given the stamina of franchise films, and the sheer power of the Star Wars universe, The Force Awakens should have no problem tackling its next hurdle: Avatar's global box office tally of $2.78 billion.
