Georgia Woman Who Shot and Killed Boyfriend Won't Face Charges, Per Grand Jury
The Burke County Sheriff's office released a statement asking for the public not to riot.
A grand jury has decided that a white woman will not be charged in the alleged accidental shooting death of her Black boyfriend.
District Attorney Jared Williams of Burke County, Georgia, revealed to WRDW on Friday (May 23) that a grand jury returned a “no bill” on 28-year-old suspect Hannah G. Cobb in the fatal shooting of her boyfriend, 30-year-old Telvin Osborne, in February.
Following the grand jury’s decision, the Burke’s County Sheriff's office asked the public not to riot.
“While we recognize that this outcome may be upsetting or unpopular to some, we strongly urge everyone to refrain from actions that could further harm our community," the office's statement says.
On Feb. 23, at around 5:45 a.m., Burke County officers responded to a shooting, and Cobb claimed that she was either “clearing or cleaning” her firearm when it discharged and hit Osborne.
There wasn’t any evidence of Cobb cleaning her, gun however. Sheriff Alonzo Williams reportedly said that alcohol was involved in the shooting and that it wasn’t listed as accidental.
Cobb later told deputies that she was checking out her nine-millimeter pistol like she did every night when it discharged and hit Osborne. She said she thought the safety was on, but it wasn't.
Cobb also acknowledged that she and Osborne had also been arguing that night because she thought that he was talking to another woman. Afterward, the two had a series of arguments that led to Osborne leaving and allegedly coming back with a knife.
The prosecution alleged that Cobb went into a bathroom and indicated that she would harm herself, which led to Osborne breaking into the bathroom. Because of this, Cobb seemingly turned the weapon on him and fired.
